CHAPTER 2

Kaylee smiled to herself. It was only Friday, and already she was mostly caught up from the vacation. Rocking back in her chair for a moment of quiet, Kaylee contemplated her next task. She was looking forward to her weekly lunch with Alex. A sudden rap on her door brought her from the small respite.

“Come in,” Kaylee said, leaning forward in her chair. Megan entered, carrying a small book, and Kaylee nearly groaned; she had already given Megan her assignments going into next week. “Megan, what’s up?”

Megan sat down without an invitation. She laid a small book on the desk, along with her sketch pad.

Kaylee glanced at the clock on her screen. Almost eleven thirty. If I fly through this, I can make the excuse for lunch.

Megan hesitated. “I, uh, wanted to talk about something.”

“Having trouble with a design?”

“Oh, this?” Megan gestured toward the sketch pad. “Uh, not really. The truth is, I need some advice.”

“Okay, shoot,” Kaylee said patiently.

“I’ve found a girl and we’re going to the show this weekend.”

“Oh, yeah?” Kaylee’s surprise was trumped by relief. It had been a few days since Megan had asked her out. The incident had made things uncomfortable when they had to work together, which was most of the time. Maybe now Megan would stop acting so strangely. “Well, congrats! I’m happy for you.”

“Thanks, but—” Megan grimaced and fidgeted on her chair. “Well, I know she wants to go to the show with me, but she hasn’t exactly agreed yet. I want to do something special to get her to say yes. Like a grand gesture, you know?”

Uh-oh. Kaylee saw where this conversation was heading and started to feel uneasy. “Maybe a grand gesture’s not necessary. Have you tried talking to her?”

“I did,” Megan said, nodding. “It didn’t go as planned, but I figured out why.”

“Oh, why then?” Kaylee asked, clinging to the hope that this was not about her.

“Well…” Megan said, pushing her sketch pad to one side, revealing the employee handbook. “I think that the reason she doesn’t want to go with me is because it’s not allowed in the company handbook.”

“Oh, she works here?” Kaylee played dumb, trying to avoid the imminent confrontation.

“Don’t be silly. It’s you!” Megan chimed playfully. “I know you wanted to go with me, but we aren’t allowed to because of these rules.”

Kaylee took a deep breath. She wasn’t sure where this idea had come from. Thinking back over the last couple of months, she could not pinpoint when or how Megan might’ve gotten the notion that Kaylee was interested in her. Her theory about Megan’s mental instability made more and more sense.

“Megan, I’m flattered, but I’m a little confused,” Kaylee said. “I think you’re great, but where did you get the idea I wanted to go out with you?”

“Well, when I started here you were always so nice to me. You even bought me lunch on my first day. You’re always telling me how great my work is, plus, you make tea for me.
